Image: Jankowski on a trip to north Africa in 2025
Jul Jankowski is a painter based in Islamorada, FL. She is a third-generation artist and works primarily with oil and recently on large-scale murals and installations. She was designated “class artist” in 8th grade and it’s been a straight shot since. She went on to study painting at the University of Florida where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts.
Her philosophy is simple: she is overwhelmed by the beauty of the world and painting is her way of translating that vastness and gratitude into something manageable and tangible. For her, creating striking images emits a similar feeling to the profound and often unnameable quality of being alive. If she could name it, perhaps she would be a writer instead. She loves music, travel, enjoys comedy and feels her best when painting or on a solo road trip somewhere new.
In her paintings, you can expect to find a mix of fact and fantasy. She uses high-chroma palettes to bridge the physical reality with the emotional. Subjects are generally animals integrated seamlessly into their environments and are often elemental in nature with an emphasis on light and atmosphere to bring forth themes of purity, spirituality, and conservation.
Her art heroes include Agnes Pelton, Vija Celmins, John Singer Sargeant, Lisa Yuskavage, Maxfield Parrish, Georgia O’ Keefe, Roger Dean, JMW Turner, Mary Blair, Alphonse Osbert, and Inka Essenhigh.
